The NSF is now responsible for the registration and approval of food grade lubricants that can be used during food or beverage production.

This whole site contains only NSF approved lubricants. The National Sanitation Foundation and their approvals replace the USDA H1 classification for food grade lubricants. For more information on the draft standard, go to www.nsf.org/usda

The following is taken from the NSF website.

ANSI/NSF Draft Standard for Trial Use - Food Grade Lubricants. In response to requests from the lubricants industry to develop a national standard for food grade lubricants, NSF has issued NSF A116 which is available from the NSF web site under "Standards." The foreword of the draft standard reads as follows:

This draft standard has been prepared by NSF International at the request of the National Lubricating Grease Institute (NLGI), and in conjunction with the European Lubricating Grease Institute (ELGI), the European Hygienic Equipment Design Group (EHEDG), and the German Institute for Normalization (DIN). This draft standard is based on the now withdrawn USDA "Guidelines for Obtaining Authorization of Compounds to be Used in Meat and Poultry Plants," USDA, FSIS, Agriculture Handbook No. 562, September 1979, and the replacement NSF International Registration Guidelines for Proprietary Substances and Non food Compounds, May 2000. This draft standard parallels the draft DIN standard, DIN V 0010517, 2000-08 entitled Food Grade Lubricants - Definitions and Requirements, which is also based on the prior USDA Guidelines. It is intended that this NSF draft standard be substantively consistent with the DIN standard.

The long term goal of this coordinated initiative is to develop an international (ISO) standard for definitions of food grade lubricants that will permit barrier free trade while protecting public health. To obtain a copy of the draft standard, go to www.techstreet.com/nsfgate.html and search for "lubricants." For more information on the draft standard, go to www.nsf.org/usda and click on the draft standard link. End of draft.
